Owen Phillips’ passion for listening to, and playing music, came about at an early age as he gained accomplished skills in classical piano before finding his ultimate outlet for his musical ability and creativity on the drum kit.
With a wide range of musical tastes, Owen is proficient in a variety of styles, including rock, funk, jazz, blues, hip hop, drum n bass, soul, and Latin styles. His main influences shape his unique sound as a blend of John Bonham’s feel and groove and the polyrhythmic technical precision of Stewart Copeland.
Owen gained a BA hons degree from the renowned popular music institute, the Academy of Contemporary Music, studying under Pete Riley (Guthrie Govan) and Mike Sturgis (Wishbone ash, Asia). It was here he developed and honed his playing style and cemented himself as a well-rounded musician.
Owen has had a wide range of live and studio experience performing and recording with function bands and original acts. He currently plays with the south west based alternative rock band Super Squarecloud
Owen covers all aspects of drum kit playing in his lessons. Topics can include; grade exams, both Trinity and Rockschool; popular music pieces; technical development; stylistic awareness; sight reading/chart reading; general technique; Moeller technique; metronome playing; theory, aural perception, amongst others.
